The ministry of endowments, Auqaf, in Kashmir is planning to establish a Madrassa Board granting the Islamic education a higher status.
The ministry of endowments, Auqaf, in Kashmir is planning to establish a Madrassa Board in the Muslim majority state, granting the Islamic education a higher status in the Indian administrated region.
“The creation of Madrassa Board in every state is a national policy,” Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, Minister for Hajj, Auqaf and Floriculture told the Legislative Council, Kashmir Dispatch reported on Thursday, February 13.
“Its formation in the state is under active consideration of the government on which J&K State Wakf Council is actively working,” he added.
Unlike the madrassas in neighboring Pakistan, Islamic schools in Kashmir do not fall under strict government scrutiny.
According to the Auqaf minister, a committee has been formed to oversee the establishment of the madrassa board.
The committee is set to visit Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Bihar to deliver the detailed proposal of the madrassa.
Kashmir madrassa will model the madrassas in the two states, UP and Bihar.
The Wakfs and Wakf properties are controlled by the Wakf board according to the Jammu and Kashmir Board for Specified Wakf and Specified Wakf Properties Act issued in 2004.
Wakf Board is also administrating the educational institutions including Madrassas that are financed by the Wakf Board.
Kashmir is divided into two parts and ruled by India and Pakistan, which have fought two of their three wars since independence in 1947 over the region.
Pakistan and the UN back the right of the Kashmir people for self-determination, an option opposed by New Delhi.
In neighboring Pakistan, there are nearly 22,000 madrassahs, of which the majority offers conventional religious education.
An estimated 2.2 million students are enrolled by the five madrassah boards across Pakistan.
