A new Muslim boxing star has risen recently after young teenager Mohamed Ali launched a promising professional career in boxing by qualifying for the World Youth Championships for the second time.
“I don’t say this about most lads but within another three years I think he will go pro,” Mike Jelley, the man who discovered and nurtured the teenage starlet Amir Khan, told The Telegraph an Argus earlier this month.
“I don’t blame Ali if he does because I think he is good enough. He will be ready then,” he added.
The 17-year-old Muslim teenage from Keighley, Bradford, was qualified to the world championship after winning the 52kg division at the Three Nations in Edinburgh.
The starlet was granted a chance to participate in the Great Britain squad for Sofia after defeating Welsh and Scottish opponents.
The qualification gives Ali an opportunity to be professional within three years after competing in the Championship next month.
The tournaments will start by mid-April in Bulgaria where Ali will arrive on April 10.
“He is a lovely lad who just works and works. Sometimes he trains too hard because he wants to do so well and you have to hold him back a bit,” added Jelley.
“He wants to go in the ring and knock them all out, which is impossible. He has got to learn to step off the gas at times but that will come – but he’s a smashing boxer.”
In his second participation at the World youth championship, Jelly aims victory for the Keighley starlet.
“Last year he faced the Russian who went on to win the gold medal in the first round and only lost on a count back,” he said.
“It’s the luck of the draw but Ali’s got every chance of doing very well.”
Britain is home to a Muslim community of nearly 2.7 million.
