Short Description
We should not be heedless of the important hint raised by Qutuz. What was it?
Whoever likes to set out for Jihaad in the Cause of Allaah, let him do that; and whoever likes to turn on his heels and rely on worldly benefits, it should be known to him that Allaah, the Almighty is watching him, and that he is responsible for violating the honor of Muslim men and women.
We should not be heedless of the important hint raised by Qutuz, May Allaah have mercy upon him, that these emirs and ministers lived for many years eating from Bayt Al-Maal, and multiplied their incomes until their jobs became meaningless, and had no aim other than the utilization of office to increase their wealth lawfully and unlawfully; and the minister no longer believed that he was an employee in service of, rather than a master over, the people, and that along with taking his rights, he should fulfill his duties, and that he would be held accountable and questioned by Allaah and his people about every step he made and every Dinar and Dirham he took. Those words of Qutuz, May Allaah have mercy upon him, were intended to awaken the conscience and revive honesty.
They also exposed the ministers before themselves. Qutuz, May Allaah have mercy upon him, saw clearly what was lurking within every minister.
Then, Qutuz, May Allaah have mercy upon him, was moved more and more, and stood and addressed the emirs and ministers while weeping: "O emirs of the Muslims! Who would defend Islam if we do not?"
How wonderful and excellent that statement is!
It is a method of life.
If every Muslim says this, the Ummah of Islam will never decline.
The Muslim sometimes expects victory to be earned by other Muslims. He hardly thinks of moving by himself. Therefore, he, more often, criticizes, analyzes and comments on the deeds and words of those who serve Islam. However, for himself, he never moves.
The Muslim sometimes expects the like of Khaalid (ibn Al-Waleed), Al-Qa‘qaa, Saladin or Qutuz to come out from the house of his neighbor or from another country. He never supposes that the likes of such heroes will come from his own house.
Why should you not be Saladin?
Why should you not be Yoosuf ibn Taashfeen?
Why should you not be Noor Ad-Deen Mahmood, the martyr?
Why?
Who would defend Islam if we do not?
All the emirs were impressed by such words, and started weeping loudly.
The hearts became submissive, and all good is expected from the one whose heart becomes submissive. Some emirs stood and said good words, thereupon the remaining emirs announced their approval of Jihaad, and readiness to face the Tatars whatever the price might be. In this way, Qutuz, May Allaah have mercy upon him, succeeded in one of the most difficult, and even one of the greatest steps of his life.
Thus, Egypt waged war against the Tatars.
It was one of the most dangerous resolutions throughout the long history of Egypt. It could hardly be rescinded; neither by the leader, he army nor the people. Qutuz, May Allaah have mercy upon him, knew well that the hearts of the emirs approved under the influence of the role model, and reminder of Allaah The Almighty and their duty towards Islam. However, since those hearts might hesitate and fear, he then liked to do something therewith to cut off the line of return on the emirs, and the hope of surrender, so that they would have no way but the military option.
